I have a favourite activity and that is going for a walk… in any of the nearest cemeteries I can find. It is a whole other world that opens up to us whilst one spends a few hours there. One of the highest expressions of the human form in statue or sculpture occurs against the back drop of the eternally resting or content. The most stirring pieces for me are the ‘Weeping Angel’ statues. I dont know what is most stirring to me about them. Perhaps just as I want to believe in Angels watching over me- so do I wish to know that they would feel something heartbreaking in the event of my passing or the passing of a loved one.

Here is one of the first pieces in my series of referencing the amazing Weeping Angels who cross my path on this strange journey of my cemetery travels. She was created in my Artists Journal and I wound up using shadows and highlights as she rose off the page and collapsed into a deeply affecting mass of tears and great feathered wings. She was benefitted by ours of painstaiking reference drawing as I sought out the correct relationships all over her pose and her environment.

Now the original is ready to fly off to her new home- wherever that may be. No matter what anyone believes I should think we can agree that is is a true blessing to have a passionately realized Angel in our midst.
