Here be the Blackthorn tree in the light of the Full Moon. The Tree gets it’s name for the long spiked branches of wood so dark it gets the name ‘Black- Thorn’. In Gaelic it is the ‘Straif’ Tree which may be the origin of ‘Strife’. This tree is a symbol of strength and survival in the midst of devastation for it withstands and seems to thrive in all kinds of harsh weather.

The Blackthorn Tree is said to have magical protection for it is guarded by the Lunantisidhe- which translates to ‘Moon Fairy’. These Lunantisidhe stay close to the Blackthorn and leave it only on the Full Moon so they may pay homage to the Great Callieach, Celtic Moon Goddess of Winter. She appears during Samhein. With a Raven on her shoulder and walking with a staff made of blackthorn. She creates mountains, rivers, whole lakes, and all sorts of Wintery Weather.

Does this robust shrub of the Irish and British lore bear fruit? Yes- in it’s resilient Blackthorn way- after the Winter frost it comes- this tree is where Sloe Berries come from. The bitter fruits from which ‘Sloe Gin’ is made.
