I was inspired to visit one of my favorite stories of hidden beauty. I had begun drawing this as a light-hearted sketch and never would have expected her to lead me by the paw and ‘dipping’ fountain pen to such meticulous hatching and complex lighting and character composition but she clearly had a life of her own. I thought of how the Heroine conducts herself when the love of her life not only has very long finger nails but- how does he go about clipping them with his huge clutchers? The tale told to me became a sweet, beguiling, and seductive one about lovers working together.

The uniqueness of these one-page-stories and what they hold over the original piece of art is that they actually appear right along side the haunting story in glorious and romantic ‘Trattatello’ font harkening to a world that dreamed and yearned before anything digital ever happened to us. “He groans and snorts as he is never in the mood to sit still like this. Easy my love. It will be over soon. I take to humming a tune for it is true what they say about savage beasts. It has an instant effect on him. His eyes relax and blink. I can’t help releasing a smile as I feel his soft purr beginning.

I take his huge paw in my hands- it’s about the size and weight of a bunch of bananas. His jagged claws catch the candles and the Moon, glistening gold and silver. He instantly calms all around me as I carefully begin to clip him.

He has been a good boy, grooming himself but those banana clumps of his are useless with the clippers. So here we are and I am tasked with trimming these rippers of his. I remembered the first time that this grooming ritual occurred- he had winced and spat and roared when I first started on him. It was a mite terrifying. Still- I told him if he wanted to maintain a woman’s touch here- in his castle, we were "...going to clip those there blades!" Poor guy didnt know what to do and so I began to hum a tune. To his credit- he adjusted. Now he stares at the whole act- almost befuddled.

I tell him what a good boy he is... and what a wild Hallowe’en we are going to have together. He licks my ear and purrs so loud, I can’t concentrate through his beastly vibrations.
